Pathology Informatics Bootcamp 2021

Course Overview

The API (Association for Pathology Informatics) Bootcamp is a training program targeted to pathology trainees, staff and physicians designed to introduce fundamental concepts in the field of Pathology Informatics through the lens of current healthcare trends and issues. The target audience are learners with little familiarity with the field, including those who hope to make it a full-time responsibility as well as those who simply want to gain an understanding of how pathologists can leverage the strengths of data and computing to improve quality, drive change, and improve diagnostic care. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented strain on all aspects of the healthcare system, including our informatics systems. In this two half-day program, learners will be introduced to the field of Pathology Informatics and gain an appreciation for the role it serves in meeting the needs of Pathology departments grappling with the pandemic and delivering on Pathology and Laboratory Medicine‘s core mission of providing the right results for the right patients at the right time.

Course Objectives

1. To recognize the role of Pathology Informatics in meeting the current challenges facing Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Departments.
2. To improve the knowledge and skills of trainees in Pathology Informatics and its application to decision making by Pathology leaders.

Target Audience

Pathology trainees, staff, and physicians with little to no background in pathology informatics.

*After completing this activity, participants will be able to leverage informatics knowledge and processes to improve testing and diagnostics workflows within pathology departments.

	Matthew Hanna, MD Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
Matthew G Hanna, MD is the Director of Digital Pathology Informatics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is an Assistant Attending of Breast pathology and Informatics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he completed his Oncologic Pathology fellowship training. Prior appointments include being a Clinical Instructor of Pathology Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also completed his Pathology Informatics fellowship. He completed his residency training at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr Hanna serves as a board member of the Digital Pathology Association and NY Pathological Society. He also actively contributes as a member of the CAP Informatics and Artificial Intelligence Committees and chairs the Machine Learning Working Group. He has strong interests in clinical and pathology informatics, computational pathology, and breast pathology.

Dr. Christensen received his BS in Computer Science at Brigham Young University. After a brief time working as an engineer at Intel Corporation, he completed his MD degree in 2014 from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston TX. He finished his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency in 2018, followed by fellowships in Clinical Informatics and Clinical Chemistry, all at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is currently on faculty at Houston Methodist where he serves as the Associate Director of Pathology Analytics.

Dr. Jackson received his BA (mathematics), MD, and MS (Medical Informatics) degrees from the University of Utah. He completed residency in clinical pathology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and was later a National Library of Medicine fellow in medical informatics. He worked as a medical informaticist at DHMC and a product manager for a Belgium-based medical software company prior to joining the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories. At ARUP he has held a variety of leadership roles, including CMIO. He launched, and is executive editor of, the ARUP Consult decision support resource. He also hosts the LabMind podcast.

Dr. Anil Parwani is a Professor of Pathology at The Ohio State University. He serves as the Vice Chair and Director of Anatomical Pathology. Dr. Parwani is also the Director of Pathology Informatics and Director of the Digital Pathology Shared Resource at The James Cancer Hospital. His research is focused on diagnostic and prognostic markers in bladder and prostate cancer, and molecular classification of renal cell carcinoma. Dr. Parwani has expertise in the area of  surgical pathology, viral vaccines and immunology, and pathology informatics including designing quality assurance tools, bio banking informatics, clinical and research data integration, applications of whole slide imaging, digital imaging, telepathology, image analysis and lab automation. Dr. Parwani has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles in major scientific journals and several books and book chapters. Dr. Parwani is the Editor-in-chief of Diagnostic Pathology and one of the Editors of the Journal of Pathology Informatics.

David McClintock, MD, is an Associate CMIO of Michigan Medicine (Pathology Informatics), Director of Digital Pathology, and Associate Professor at the University of Michigan. His primary clinical interests comprise operational pathology and clinical laboratory informatics including workflow analysis, laboratory information system optimization, and improved integration of pathology and clinical laboratory data within the EHR and clinical research data warehouses. His research interests include understanding the role and effects of whole slide imaging and digital pathology within the clinical laboratories, the effects of computational pathology and machine learning on diagnostics testing and patient outcomes, and how to enable laboratory data analytics in order to provide both pathologists and clinicians opportunities to better optimize patient care and clinical decision-making.

Dr. Williams received his BS and MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Oklahoma State University. After a brief stint as an electronics engineer for the Department of Defense, he completed his MD and Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and subsequently completed a Pathology Informatics Fellowship and the University of Michigan. He is currently on faculty at OU Health where he serves as the director of Informatics for the Pathology Department.

Ronald Jackups, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Pathology & Immunology and Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He serves as Chief Medical Information Officer for Laboratories at BJC Healthcare. His clinical and research interests include decision analysis and clinical decision support for laboratory test and blood product utilization.

Dr. Sirintrapun is the Director of Pathology Informatics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and an Associate Attending and member of the Warren Alpert Center for Computational Pathology at MSKCC. Dr. Sirintrapun is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Clinical Informatics. In addition to his work in digital and computational pathology, he practices surgical pathology specializing in genitourinary tumors. Dr. Sirintrapun is the current API President. His efforts are in data and systems engineering as it relates to digital and computational pathology. He works towards a better understanding of the cognitive and social impacts of technology on clinical practice, and particularly on operationalization or the translation of innovations in digital pathology and computational pathology to practice and policy. His efforts have resulted in the large-scale clinical utilization of digital glass slides and telecytology at MSKCC. Dr. Sirintrapun is also passionately engaged in cultivating a medical and technological workforce to propel pathology informatics and computational pathology into the future.

Dr. Long received his MD degree in 2007 from The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston TX, where he also earned a PhD in Experimental Pathology. While at UTMB, he was the recipient of a McLaughlin Fellowship for Immunity and Infectious Disease and a Sealy Center for Vaccine Development fellowship. After finishing his doctoral studies, Dr. Long completed a clinical pathology residency at Houston Methodist. He currently serves as a member of the Editorial Board for Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Long joined Houston Methodist Hospital in 2011, and received his faculty appointment at the Weill Cornell Medical College in 2012.

Dr. James Crawford oversees the integrated laboratories of the Northwell Health system.  He is a leading proponent of the role of pathology and the clinical laboratory industry in patient-centered care and value-based care.  As a founding member of the Project Santa Fe Foundation and Chair of the Board of Directors, Dr. Crawford is a leader in the effort to develop the value statements for laboratory diagnostic services in the next era of health care.  He is Editor-in-Chief of Academic Pathology, the official journal of the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC).  Dr. Crawford’s area of subspecialty practice is Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology.
