Abstract: Primary diagnosis using whole slide images acquired by bright-field microscopy has been the main focus of digital pathology efforts to date. Digital acquisition of whole slide images using fluorescence microscopy is also possible and offers the same advantages in terms of slide interpretation, sharing, retrievability, and (potentially) quantitative analysis. The role of immunofluorescence in diagnostic pathology is particularly important in cardiothoracic, renal, dermatologic, and transplant pathology, but fluorescence imaging has other niche applications as well. A real-world approach to digital pathology validation for primary diagnosis of fluorescence microscopy slides will be presented, along with an overview of fluorescence applications in anatomic pathology. |
